Central air installation cost by region

Lower cost states$3,200 to $8,000. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states$4,000 to $10,000. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states$5,200 to $13,000. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Southern states run AC most and have the most HVAC competition.

The load calculation that sizes the whole job

A Manual J load calculation measures how much cooling your home actually needs, based on size, insulation, windows and climate. NerdWallet puts it at $300 to $900 if a contractor charges for it, and many include it. A contractor who sizes the system by square footage alone may sell you a unit that is too big. An oversized AC cycles on and off, wastes power and leaves the house clammy.

Ask every bidder how they sized the system. If they did a Manual J, ask for a copy.

    No ducts?

If your home has no ducts, adding them is the costly part. A ducted system can make sense in a remodel when walls are open. Otherwise, compare with our mini split installation cost page and our heat pump cost page.

Why this costs more in 2026

AC units are copper, aluminum and steel, shipped by truck, and installs need a loaded service van and a crew.

Diesel passed $6 a gallon on the AAA national average for the first time on September 11, 2026 (CBS 8 reporting AAA). Builders also paid 4.8 percent more for materials in a year (Roofing Contractor). Ask how long your quote is good for.
