How we calculate this
Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.
Heat pump cost by type
| Ductless mini split, one zone | $1,500 to $5,000 installed. One 2026 guide puts each zone at $2,000 to $7,000. |
|---|---|
| Whole home ducted air source | $8,000 to $15,000 for most homes. One guide puts a standard central system at $7,500 to $11,000. |
| Premium or cold climate system | $12,000 to $20,000. In the Denver market, a unit rated to 15 below zero runs $20,752 to $28,031. |
| Dual fuel, added to a furnace | From about $3,000. The heat pump handles mild days and the furnace takes over in deep cold. |
| Geothermal | $12,000 to $25,000 for small and mid size homes. Large jobs pass $30,000 because of the ground loop. |
| Labor | $75 to $125 per hour in one guide and $100 to $250 per hour per person in another. About 15 hours, or $1,500 to $5,000. |
| Per ton, from real invoices | $6,912 per ton across 875 ducted installs in the Mass Save program. A 3 ton system works out to $20,736. |

Type the price you were quoted. We compare it to the usual 2026 range of $5,000 to $15,000.
What pushes a quote up
| Your state | EnergySage quotes run from about $8,000 in New Mexico to about $33,000 in New York for a whole home setup. |
|---|---|
| Ducts | A home with good ducts pays for the equipment and a swap. A home with no ducts pays for ducts or for several ductless heads. |
| Cold climate rating | Units that keep heating far below freezing cost thousands more than standard models. |
| Size in tons | Bigger homes and leakier homes need more tons, and the price climbs with each one. |
| Electrical work | An older panel may need a new circuit or an upgrade before the heat pump can go in. |
Heat pump cost by region
| Lower cost states | $4,000 to $12,000. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas. |
|---|---|
| Average cost states | $5,000 to $15,000. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities. |
| Higher cost states | $6,500 to $19,500. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC. |
These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. The gap between states is wider for heat pumps than for most jobs, because cold states need bigger, cold rated equipment.
Cost guides say $8,000. Real quotes say $15,000. Both are true
This is the biggest gap we have found on any page of this site. Fixr reports an average of $8,350. Inch Calculator says $6,500. Budget Heating says typical projects cluster around $6,000. Then EnergySage, which runs a marketplace where installers bid on real homes, reports an average of $15,393. Carrier, which makes the equipment, gives a range of $6,000 to $25,000.
The Massachusetts numbers are harder still. A 2026 pricing study of real Mass Save invoices covered 875 ducted installs from late 2022 through 2024. The average was $6,912 per ton. A common 3 ton system comes to $20,736.
Why the gap exists
The low averages include a lot of small jobs: a single ductless head for a garage or a sunroom, and like for like swaps where an old heat pump comes out and a new one goes on the same pad. The high averages are whole home conversions from oil, gas or electric resistance heat, often with cold climate equipment, new wiring and duct changes. If you are replacing an old heat pump in a mild state, plan around the cost guides. If you are converting a cold climate home from oil or gas, plan around the real quotes.
The fair comparison
A heat pump replaces two machines. It heats and it cools. One 2026 guide puts a furnace plus a central air conditioner at $8,000 to $15,000 installed. Set against that, a $7,500 to $11,000 central heat pump looks very different than it does next to a furnace alone.
Why this costs more in 2026
A heat pump is copper, aluminum, refrigerant and electronics, shipped a long way. Heating oil at more than $5 a gallon is also sending more people to ask for quotes this fall.
Fuel went up fast this year. AAA diesel topped $6 a gallon on September 11, 2026 (CBS 8), and building material prices rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Get the quote date in writing.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Divide the price by the tons. Real invoices in Massachusetts averaged $6,912 per ton. It gives you a yardstick for a whole home job.
- Ask for the low temperature rating. In a cold state, ask what the unit puts out at 5 degrees, not only at 47.
- Ask for a load calculation. Sizing by square feet alone leads to the wrong tonnage.
- Check the duct plan. Old ducts sized for a furnace may need changes. It should be in writing.
- Get the incentives in writing. Rebates change by state and by year. The quote should show the price before and after.
Ways to pay less
- Start with one zone. A single ductless head in the room you use most costs $1,500 to $5,000.
- Keep the furnace as backup. A dual fuel setup starts near $3,000 and avoids the cold climate premium.
- Check state and utility rebates. One 2026 rebate guide lists up to $8,000 for income qualified homes under the HEAR program where it is open.
- Get three quotes. The spread between installers on the same house is often several thousand dollars.

Common questions
How much does a heat pump cost?
$5,000 to $15,000 installed in 2026, with an average near $8,350 in cost guides. Real installer quotes collected by EnergySage average $15,393 before incentives.
How much does a heat pump cost for a 2,000 square foot house?
Most whole home ducted air source systems run $8,000 to $15,000. Cold climate systems and homes that need duct or panel work cost more.
Why are heat pump quotes so much higher than the averages online?
The averages include small ductless jobs and simple swaps. Whole home conversions with cold climate equipment cost far more. Real Massachusetts invoices averaged $6,912 per ton.
Is a heat pump cheaper than a furnace?
Not next to a furnace alone. It is closer when you count the air conditioner it also replaces, at $8,000 to $15,000 for both.
How much does a mini split heat pump cost?
$1,500 to $5,000 for one zone installed. Each added zone raises the total.
