    What pushes a quote up

What failedA sensor is a small bill. Worn internals mean a rebuild or a new unit.
Transmission typeCVTs and truck and luxury units sit at the top of the range.
Rebuild or replaceRebuilds cost less. New and remanufactured units carry longer warranties.
Shop rateClose to half of shops charged $120 to $159 an hour in 2026 labor rate findings.
ExtrasTowing, cooler flushing, programming and mounts can sit outside the first quote.

    Transmission repair cost by region

Lower cost states$2,000 to $3,600. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states$2,500 to $4,500. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states$3,200 to $5,800. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Transmission shops are specialists, and their rates follow local living costs closely.

Repair, rebuild, used or new: how to choose

Start with a diagnosis. Always Do Better's 2026 guide makes the point that many shifting problems are a solenoid, a sensor or old fluid, which cost $150 to $1,000. Do not agree to a rebuild until the shop tells you what failed and how they tested it.

If the internals are worn, you have three paths. A rebuild keeps your case and replaces the wear parts, usually $2,500 to $4,500. A remanufactured or new unit costs more, $3,500 to $8,000 or more, but usually carries a longer warranty. A used unit from a salvage yard is the cheapest, about $800 to $1,500 for the part, but you take on its unknown history.

    When not to fix it

Compare the bill with the car's value. If a $4,000 rebuild goes into a car worth $3,000, selling it as is may make more sense. Check any powertrain warranty or service contract first. ThePricer notes that towing, cooler flushing, module relearning and broken fittings can sit outside the headline quote unless the estimate says they are included.

Why this costs more in 2026

Transmission units are heavy, precise parts shipped long distances, and removing one takes a full day of labor.

Diesel passed $6 a gallon on the AAA national average for the first time on September 11, 2026 (CBS 8 reporting AAA). Builders also paid 4.8 percent more for materials in a year (Roofing Contractor). Ask how long your quote is good for.
