How we calculate this
Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.
Cost by vehicle, per axle
| Typical range | $300 to $1,500 per axle (J.D. Power). |
|---|---|
| Acura TL (2013) | About $446 (YourMechanic). |
| Mitsubishi Outlander Sport (2015) | About $461. |
| Chevrolet Colorado (2015) | About $602. |
| BMW 650i Gran Coupe (2016) | About $1,028. |
| Large SUV solid axle shaft | A Chevrolet Suburban axle shaft runs $2,083 to $2,298 (RepairPal, July 2026). That is a different part from a CV axle. |
| Labor time | About 1.5 to 3 hours per axle. |
What pushes a quote up
| Vehicle | Luxury and performance cars use dearer axles. |
|---|---|
| New, reman or OEM | Remanufactured and aftermarket axles cost far less than dealer parts. |
| Front or rear | All wheel drive cars have rear CV axles too. |
| Access | Some cars need more of the suspension taken apart. |
| Other worn parts | Wheel bearings and seals found during the job add cost. |
CV axle replacement cost by region
| Lower cost states | $350 to $475. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas. |
|---|---|
| Average cost states | $450 to $600. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities. |
| Higher cost states | $575 to $775. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC. |
These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Axle jobs are short, so the price difference between states is mostly the hourly rate.
The click when you turn, and when a boot is enough
A worn outer CV joint usually clicks or pops when you turn at low speed, for example in a parking lot. The joint sits inside a rubber boot filled with grease. When the boot tears, grease flies out, dirt gets in and the joint wears fast.
If a shop spots a torn boot early, before any clicking, a boot kit can save the joint. Once it clicks, most shops replace the whole axle, because a complete remanufactured or aftermarket axle often costs little more than a boot kit plus labor. Check the boots whenever the car is on a lift for an oil change or tires.
Do not wait too long
J.D. Power warns that ignoring a worn CV axle can lead to a breakdown or worse. A clicking axle can keep working for a while, but a joint that fails at speed can leave the car unable to drive.
Why this costs more in 2026
Axles are heavy steel parts, and freight and shop labor both cost more this year.
Fuel went up fast this year. AAA diesel topped $6 a gallon on September 11, 2026 (CBS 8), and building material prices rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Get the quote date in writing.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Ask which side and which joint. Inner or outer.
- Ask if the price is per axle.
- Ask what brand of axle and the warranty.
- Compare with 1.5 to 3 hours of labor.
- Ask to see the torn boot or the play in the joint.
Ways to pay less
- Catch torn boots early at oil changes.
- Use a quality remanufactured axle on an older car.
- Replace only the bad side unless both are worn.
- Use a mobile mechanic for a simple bolt in axle.
