How we calculate this

Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.

    Cost by store (2026)

Walmart, basic package$18 per tire for tires bought there: mount, balance, valve stem or TPMS service pack, lifetime balance and rotation, and a re-torque.
Walmart, value packageAbout $28 per tire, adding road hazard coverage.
Tires bought elsewhereAbout $11 more per tire at Walmart, and a regional per tire charge at Discount Tire.
CostcoInstallation included at no charge for members buying tires there, with rotation, balancing and flat repairs.
Discount TireInstallation covers labor, valve stems or TPMS kits, mounting, balancing, disposal and an inspection. Mobile service can add $50 or more.

    What pushes a quote up

TPMS sensorsService kits or new sensors add cost.
Tire sizeLarge truck, low profile and run flat tires can cost more to mount.
Mobile serviceInstallation at your home adds a convenience fee.

    Tire installation cost by region

Lower cost states$15 to $20. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states$18 to $28. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states$25 to $35. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Discount Tire prices carry-in installs by store region, so the same tire can cost more to fit in a big metro.

What "free installation" does and does not cover

Retailers package tire labor differently, which makes comparing quotes tricky. ThePricer's June 2026 review of Discount Tire, Costco and Walmart found that a quote can include mounting, balancing, TPMS service kits, old tire disposal, state recycling fees, and later rotations and flat repairs, or leave some of them out. The per tire installed price matters more than the sticker price on the tire.

Costco's member installation at no charge is strong value if Costco stocks your tire and you are already a member. Walmart's $18 basic package is simple to compare. Discount Tire lists what its installation covers on its own page, and prices carry-in tires by region.

    The alignment question

New tires do not always need an alignment, but uneven wear on the old ones is a sign you do. An alignment costs about $100 to $168 for four wheels. See our wheel alignment cost page.

Why this costs more in 2026

Tires are heavy petroleum products that ship by truck, and state recycling fees keep climbing.

Every truck trip costs more now. Diesel passed $6 a gallon in September 2026 (CBS 8 reporting AAA), and material costs rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Quotes may only hold for a few weeks.
