Serpentine belt replacement cost by region

Lower cost states$80 to $160. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states$100 to $200. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states$130 to $260. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. This is a short, cheap job, so regional differences are small in dollars.

Why a $20 belt matters so much

The serpentine belt drives the alternator, power steering pump, water pump and air conditioning compressor on most cars. When it snaps, the battery stops charging, steering gets heavy and the engine can overheat within minutes. That is why a cheap part deserves attention.

Watch for squealing at startup, cracks across the ribs, or glazing on the belt surface. Check your owner's manual for the replacement interval. A worn tensioner can wreck a new belt, so ask the shop to check it.

Rick's Free Auto Repair Advice points out a surprise: some small cars, such as the Toyota Yaris, cost more in labor because they lack an automatic tensioner. See our alternator and water pump pages.

Why this costs more in 2026

Belts are rubber products made from petroleum, and every shop hour costs more this year.

Fuel went up fast this year. AAA diesel topped $6 a gallon on September 11, 2026 (CBS 8), and building material prices rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Get the quote date in writing.
