How we calculate this

Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.

    Clutch replacement cost by region

Lower cost states$1,000 to $1,750. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states$1,250 to $2,200. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states$1,625 to $2,900. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Labor is half or more of this bill, so shop rates in your area matter a lot.

Slipping clutch signs, and the flywheel question

A slipping clutch lets the engine rev without the car speeding up, especially in higher gears or going uphill. Other signs are a burning smell, shuddering on takeoff, a soft or sticky pedal, and trouble shifting. RepairPal notes there is no set replacement interval, and some clutches last over 100,000 miles.

Once the transmission is out, the shop will look at the flywheel. Resurfacing or replacing it is extra, and some shops recommend new clutch forks as well. Ask for those prices up front, because the labor to get back in later is the expensive part.

ConsumerAffairs notes traditional manual transmissions are cheapest. Dual clutch and automated manual systems need more parts and labor. See our transmission repair cost page.

Why this costs more in 2026

Every hour of transmission removal is billed at this year's labor rate, and clutch kits cost more to make and ship.

Fuel went up fast this year. AAA diesel topped $6 a gallon on September 11, 2026 (CBS 8), and building material prices rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Get the quote date in writing.
