How we calculate this
Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.
What does one IVF cycle cost, part by part?
| Base IVF cycle | $12,000 to $18,000. Monitoring, egg retrieval and lab work (Inception Fertility). |
|---|---|
| Fertility medicine | $1,500 to $7,000. |
| Consults and tests | $200 to $1,500. |
| Genetic testing of embryos (PGT-A) | $3,000 to $6,000. |
| ICSI (sperm injection) | $1,200 to $3,000. |
| Frozen embryo transfer | $3,000 to $5,000, often billed apart. |
| All in, typical | $20,000 to $25,000 or more. |
What pushes a quote up
| Number of cycles | Many people need two or three. |
|---|---|
| Medicine dose | Some patients need much more medicine. |
| Add ons | Genetic testing and ICSI add thousands. |
| Clinic and city | Big city clinics cost more. |
| Insurance | Some states require some coverage. |
IVF cost by region
| Lower cost states | $16,000 to $20,000. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas. |
|---|---|
| Average cost states | $20,000 to $25,000. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities. |
| Higher cost states | $26,000 to $32,500. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC. |
These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Big city clinics charge the most. New York and California are at the top.
Why one cycle is not the full cost
The price a clinic quotes is often the base cycle only. That is monitoring, egg retrieval and lab work. Medicine, genetic testing, ICSI and a frozen transfer are often billed on top. That is how a $12,000 base becomes $20,000 to $25,000.
Many patients need more than one cycle to have a baby. Some clinics sell multi cycle packages or refund programs that return part of the money if treatment does not work. These cost more up front, so read the terms.
Insurance and your state
Some states require certain health plans to cover some fertility treatment. Coverage rules differ a lot. Call your plan and ask exactly what is covered before you start.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Ask what the base price includes.
- Ask for a list of all add ons and their prices.
- Ask how medicine is priced.
- Ask about multi cycle or refund plans.
- Ask the clinic's success rates for your age.
Ways to pay less
- Check your insurance and state rules.
- Compare medicine prices at two pharmacies.
- Ask if genetic testing is needed for you.
- Ask about package pricing.
- Use an FSA or HSA.
Before you decide
Plan for more than one round
Because many patients need two or three cycles, the total spend is often much higher than the first quote. Plan your budget for the full path, not just one try.
Ask each clinic for its live birth rate for patients your age. A cheaper clinic with lower success can cost more in the end if you need more cycles.
Some employers now offer fertility benefits through a separate program. Check with your HR team before you pay out of pocket.

Frozen transfers cost less
If a cycle makes extra embryos, they can be frozen. A later frozen embryo transfer costs about $3,000 to $5,000, much less than a new cycle, per Inception Fertility. Ask about storage fees too.
About $20,000 to $25,000 per cycle all in for 2026. About $1,500 to $7,000 per cycle. Many need two or three. Sometimes. It depends on your plan and your state. Related jobs people check next, with the usual 2026 price.Common questions
