Why prices differ by store
The eye doctor at a LensCrafters store is usually an independent optometrist, not a LensCrafters employee. That doctor sets the exam fee, which is why two stores can charge different prices.
You do not have to buy glasses at LensCrafters after the exam. You can ask for your written prescription.
Compared with other chains

Before you decide
What drives the final bill
Arizona's Vision notes that dilation, retina imaging and specialty contact lens fittings are often billed apart from the exam. LensCrafters stores offer a digital exam called Clarifye that maps the eye. Ask if it is in the exam price or an extra.
A worked example
Say you want contacts for the first time. A contact lens exam in the $100 to $200 range might come to about $150 before you buy any lenses. A glasses only exam at the same store might be about $90. So ask for the contact lens exam price, not just the exam price.
Routine or medical exam
A routine exam checks your prescription and basic eye health. If you have an eye problem, like an infection or a diabetes check, the visit may be billed as a medical exam to your health insurance instead.
