Lower cost states	$40 to $80. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states	$50 to $100. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states	$65 to $130. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

Do you need a Costco membership?

ThePricer reports that you can book an eye exam at many Costco warehouses without a membership, but only members can buy glasses or contacts there. Rules can differ by warehouse, so call ahead.

Most Costco Optical eye doctors are independent. That is why prices differ between warehouses. All About Vision says some include dilation or retina photos in the exam price, and others charge for them.

The exam price is close to other stores. The bigger savings are usually on glasses and contact lenses, which members can buy after the exam.
