How we calculate this
Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.
What the price is made of
| Parts | About $290 to $426 (RepairPal, via ThePricer). Belt, tensioner and idler pulleys. |
|---|---|
| Labor | About $584 to $858. Labor is the bigger share. |
| Total | About $874 to $1,284, and $800 to $1,300 for most cars in SoFi's guide. |
| Hours | About 2 to 3 hours on an easy engine, 4 to 5 or more on a hard one (SKF, via ThePricer). |
| Water pump at the same time | Doing both at once can save about $400 in labor (ConsumerAffairs). |
Is your quote fair?
Type the price you were quoted. We compare it to the usual 2026 range of $800 to $1,300.
What pushes a quote up
| Engine layout | V6 engines and tight engine bays take far longer than a simple four cylinder. |
|---|---|
| Water pump | On many engines the pump sits behind the belt. Adding it costs parts but saves a second teardown. |
| Kit contents | A full kit with tensioner and idlers costs more than a belt alone, and is usually worth it. |
| Engine mount | Some cars need an engine mount removed to reach the belt. |
| Shop rate | The job is mostly labor, so the hourly rate moves the total. |
Timing belt replacement cost by region
| Lower cost states | $700 to $1,025. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas. |
|---|---|
| Average cost states | $874 to $1,284. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities. |
| Higher cost states | $1,125 to $1,675. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC. |
These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Because labor is two thirds of this job, the local shop rate matters more here than on most repairs.
Replace the water pump too, or not
On many engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt and sits behind the same covers. The mechanic has already done most of the work to reach it. ConsumerAffairs quotes an Atlanta area mechanic on the logic and puts the labor saving at about $400 when both are done together. If the pump fails a month later, you pay most of that labor again.
The same article gives the other side. If a shop insists you must replace several parts at once, get a second opinion unless you know the shop. A pump that is not behind the belt on your engine does not need to be done with it.
Why you should not wait
Many engines are interference engines. If the belt snaps, the valves can hit the pistons, and a belt job becomes an engine job. Your owner's manual gives the replacement interval in miles and years. If the car is past it and you do not know the history, budget for the belt.
Why this costs more in 2026
This is a labor heavy job, and shop labor rates have kept climbing with the rest of a shop's costs.
Every truck trip costs more now. Diesel passed $6 a gallon in September 2026 (CBS 8 reporting AAA), and material costs rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Quotes may only hold for a few weeks.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Ask what is in the kit. Belt, tensioner, idlers, and the pump if it is behind the belt.
- Ask how many hours they quoted. Compare with the 2 to 5 hour range.
- Check the labor share. About two thirds labor is normal.
- Ask for the old belt back. It shows the job was done.
- Get a second quote if extra parts are pushed hard.
Ways to pay less
- Do the pump with the belt when it sits behind the belt.
- Use an independent shop once the car is out of warranty.
- Do it on schedule, not after it snaps.
- Ask for a quality aftermarket kit if the dealer part is much dearer.
Common questions
How much does a timing belt replacement cost?
About $800 to $1,300 in 2026. RepairPal's national estimate is about $874 to $1,284.
Why is a timing belt so expensive?
The belt is cheap. Labor is about $584 to $858 because the belt sits behind covers and pulleys.
Should I replace the water pump with the timing belt?
If the pump sits behind the belt, usually yes. It can save about $400 in labor.
What happens if a timing belt breaks?
The engine stops. On an interference engine, the valves can hit the pistons and damage the engine.
