How we calculate this

Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.

    What pushes a quote up

CoolantA fresh fill of coolant is added.
Related partsThermostats and belts are often swapped at the same time.

Water pump replacement cost by region

Lower cost states$475 to $875. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states$600 to $1,100. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states$775 to $1,425. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Labor is a large share of this job, so shops in high cost cities quote more.

Water pump and timing belt: do both

On many engines the water pump sits behind the timing belt and is driven by it. ConsumerAffairs notes that many mechanics recommend replacing both at once because the labor overlaps, which can save $400 or more compared with doing them separately. If your timing belt is near its replacement mileage, ask for a combined quote.

Watch for coolant leaks at the front of the engine, a rising temperature gauge, steam, or a whining noise. An overheating engine can warp the head, which turns an $800 job into a much larger one.

Most factory and extended powertrain warranties cover water pumps, so check yours first. See our timing belt replacement cost and head gasket repair cost pages.

Why this costs more in 2026

Shop labor rates rose again this year, and this is a labor heavy job on most engines.

Every truck trip costs more now. Diesel passed $6 a gallon in September 2026 (CBS 8 reporting AAA), and material costs rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Quotes may only hold for a few weeks.
