How we calculate this
Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.
Cost by engine (CoverageX)
| Small 4 cylinder sedan | $1,200 to $1,800, about 10 to 14 hours. |
|---|---|
| V6 sedan or crossover | $1,800 to $2,800, about 14 to 18 hours. |
| V8 truck or SUV | $2,200 to $3,500, about 16 to 22 hours. |
| Subaru | $2,000 to $3,200, about 15 to 20 hours. |
| Luxury car | $2,500 to $4,500 or more, 18 to 25 hours or more. |
| Mechanic survey quotes | $2,886 to $6,047, with averages of $3,456 to $5,459 on the sample cars (ConsumerAffairs). |
| Extra seals, gaskets and hoses | About $200 to $500 more while the engine is open. |
Is your quote fair?
Type the price you were quoted. We compare it to the usual 2026 range of $1,500 to $3,500.
What pushes a quote up
| Engine layout | V6 and V8 engines have two heads and more parts in the way. |
|---|---|
| Machining | A warped head must be resurfaced at a machine shop. |
| Damage | Overheating can crack a head or damage the block. |
| Timing parts | On many engines the timing belt or chain comes off too. |
| Shop rate | At 10 to 20 hours, a small change in the hourly rate moves the bill a lot. |
Head gasket repair cost by region
| Lower cost states | $1,200 to $2,800. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas. |
|---|---|
| Average cost states | $1,500 to $3,500. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities. |
| Higher cost states | $1,950 to $4,600. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC. |
These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. At 10 to 20 hours of labor, the gap between a low cost and a high cost state can be several hundred dollars.
Fix it, or sell the car
A head gasket job is often worth more than an older car. Before you approve it, compare the quote with what the car is worth running, and what a buyer would pay for it as is. If the car is worth $4,000 and the repair is $3,000, the math can still work. If the car is worth $2,500, it often does not.
Ask how they confirmed it. Common signs are white exhaust smoke, coolant loss with no leak, overheating and milky oil. A shop can run a combustion leak test or a cooling system pressure test. Ask for the result.
Why quotes vary so much
CoverageX's figures show the hours: 10 to 14 on a small four cylinder, up to 25 or more on some luxury engines. Add a machine shop charge if the head is warped, and $200 to $500 of extra seals and hoses. Get the hours in writing and ask what happens to the price if they find a crack.
Why this costs more in 2026
This is one of the most labor heavy jobs a shop does, and shop labor rates rose again this year.
Diesel passed $6 a gallon on the AAA national average for the first time on September 11, 2026 (CBS 8 reporting AAA). Builders also paid 4.8 percent more for materials in a year (Roofing Contractor). Ask how long your quote is good for.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Ask for the test result that confirmed the gasket.
- Get the hours in writing.
- Ask about machining and what a crack would cost.
- Ask what else comes off. Timing parts, water pump.
- Compare with the car's value.
Ways to pay less
- Stop driving it if it overheats. More heat means more damage.
- Get two quotes. Hours vary by shop.
- Do the timing belt at the same time if it is due.
- Sell as is if the repair beats the car's value.
