Spark plug replacement costs $100 to $250 in 2026. What changes your price is below.

J.D. Power puts a simple job at $100 to $250 and a hard one at $250 to $500. Labor alone ranges from $40 to $350, because the rear plugs on many V6 engines sit under the intake. A 2004 Honda Pilot V6 near Boston runs $435 to $511 at Kelley Blue Book, with $261 to $307 of that labor.

Spark plug replacement cost by region

Lower cost states$80 to $200. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states$100 to $250. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states$130 to $325. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. The Honda Pilot example above is a Massachusetts price, which sits in our higher cost band.

When plugs are due, and why a V6 costs double

J.D. Power gives the usual intervals: about 30,000 to 40,000 miles for standard plugs, about 60,000 for platinum tipped plugs, and 100,000 to 120,000 for iridium. Most modern cars come with iridium, so many owners change plugs only once or twice in the car's life. Your owner's manual has the exact number.

On a four cylinder engine the plugs sit on top and come out in minutes. On many V6 engines the rear three plugs sit under the intake manifold, so the shop has to take the top of the engine apart. That is why the same job can cost $150 on one car and $500 on another.

    Replace them all at once

J.D. Power advises replacing all the plugs together so they wear evenly. If the engine is misfiring, ask whether a coil or wire is at fault too, before you pay for plugs alone.

Why this costs more in 2026

Plug work is mostly labor at this year's shop rates, and parts ship by truck.

Fuel went up fast this year. AAA diesel topped $6 a gallon on September 11, 2026 (CBS 8), and building material prices rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Get the quote date in writing.
