How we calculate this

Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.

    Middle $2,000$1,000 to $3,000

Cost by attic size and material

    500 square feet$500 to $1,500.
1,000 square feet$1,000 to $3,000. One installer puts blown fiberglass to R-38 at $1,500 to $2,000.
    1,500 square feet$1,500 to $4,500.
2,000 square feet$3,000 to $4,000 for blown in to R-38. $3,600 to $9,200 across all materials, with most near $5,800.
Blown in$1 to $4 per square foot. HomeGuide puts a blown in attic at $0.90 to $2.40 per square foot.
Batts and rolls$2 to $4 per square foot.
Spray foam$2 to $5 per square foot in HomeAdvisor. A 1,000 square foot roof deck is $3,000 to $5,000 in open cell and $4,500 to $7,000 in closed cell.
Labor alone$1.50 to $3 per square foot, or $1,000 to $3,000 for a standard attic.
Removing old insulation$1 to $2 per square foot.

    What pushes a quote up

MaterialBlown in is the low cost choice for an open attic floor. One 2026 guide says it reaches R-49 to R-60 for 40 to 70 percent less than spray foam.
R-value targetAttics need R-30 to R-60 depending on the climate. Colder states need more depth, and depth is what you pay for.
What is up there nowTopping up clean insulation is cheap. Removing wet, moldy or rodent soiled insulation first is not.
Air sealing and bafflesSealing gaps around lights and pipes, and adding vent baffles, is extra labor that makes the insulation work.
Minimum job sizeSome companies will not roll a truck for less than $1,500 to $2,000.

    Attic insulation cost by region

Lower cost states$1,350 to $2,800. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states$1,700 to $3,500. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states$2,200 to $4,600. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Cold states need deeper insulation, so the same attic costs more to bring up to code in Maine than in Texas.

The cheapest heating upgrade this winter

NEADA projects the average home will spend $1,030 on heat this winter, and homes on heating oil will pay about 31 percent more than last year. A new furnace costs $2,800 to $7,500. Attic insulation costs $1,700 to $2,500. For most homes it is the first dollar to spend, because heat rises and the attic floor is the biggest surface it escapes through.

One 2026 insulation guide quotes the Department of Energy estimate of 15 to 25 percent energy savings from proper insulation plus air sealing. On a $1,030 heating bill that is $150 to $260 a winter, and more in an oil heated home in the Northeast, where NEADA puts the average bill at $1,449.

    Air seal first

Insulation slows heat. It does not stop air. Gaps around recessed lights, plumbing stacks, the chimney chase and the attic hatch leak warm air straight through a foot of fiberglass. A good quote lists air sealing as a line. If it does not, ask.

    Doing it yourself

Blown in attic insulation is one of the few big energy jobs a careful owner can do. One contractor guide puts DIY materials for a standard attic at $700 to $900, and home improvement stores rent the blowing machine. Wear a respirator, stay on the joists, and keep insulation away from old recessed lights that are not rated for contact.

Why this costs more in 2026

Spray foam is made from petroleum chemicals, and every bag of fiberglass or cellulose rides a truck. Heating oil up about 31 percent this winter is also the reason many people are asking for this quote now.

Diesel passed $6 a gallon on the AAA national average for the first time on September 11, 2026 (CBS 8 reporting AAA). Builders also paid 4.8 percent more for materials in a year (Roofing Contractor). Ask how long your quote is good for.
