How we calculate this

Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.

New boiler cost by fuel and scope

Gas boiler$4,000 to $9,000 installed in HomeGuide. $4,000 to $10,000 in a September 2026 guide.
    Oil boiler, standard$3,300 to $7,200.
Oil boiler, high efficiency$6,300 to $9,000. One guide puts oil boiler jobs at $6,500 to $13,500 with tank and line work.

    Is your quote fair?

Type the price you were quoted. We compare it to the usual 2026 range of $3,500 to $8,500.

    What pushes a quote up

FuelOil boilers need the most service and the most extras: tank, lines, nozzle and tuning.
EfficiencyA 95 percent condensing boiler needs plastic venting and a drain for the condensate. That is new work in most basements.
Size in BTUsBigger and colder homes need more output. A boiler that is too big wastes fuel.
Steam or hot waterSteam systems have fewer equipment choices and need a specialist.
The piping around itOld near boiler piping, the expansion tank and the circulator pumps are often replaced at the same time.

    Boiler replacement cost by region

Lower cost states$2,800 to $6,800. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states$3,500 to $8,500. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states$4,600 to $11,000. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Boilers are mostly found in the Northeast and upper Midwest, where labor rates are already above average.

Five guides, one average: where the real spread comes from

For once the big guides agree. ConsumerAffairs says $5,750. HomeAdvisor says $5,883. Angi says $5,910. A September 2026 home warranty guide says $6,100. This Old House gives a range of $4,500 to $10,000. If your quote for a like for like gas boiler swap is between $4,000 and $8,500, it is normal.

The spread comes from what sits around the boiler. HomeGuide lists the extras: a chimney liner at $1,500 to $4,000, a gas line at $15 to $50 per foot, removing an old fuel tank at $400 to $3,400, and a new oil tank at $1,200 to $4,600. One of those can add half the price of the boiler.

    Oil boiler owners this winter

NEADA projects heating oil households will spend about 31 percent more this winter, and retail heating oil was $5.40 to $5.90 a gallon on September 21, 2026. If your oil boiler is past 15 years, this is the year to price three options side by side: a new oil boiler, a gas boiler if gas is in your street, and a heat pump with the old boiler kept for the coldest days. We have a page for each.

    When to replace

Boilers last 15 to 20 years or more. One 2026 guide gives three signs that replacement beats repair: the boiler is past 15 years, the repair quote is $1,500 or more, or efficiency has fallen below 80 percent. A normal boiler repair is $200 to $600.

Why this costs more in 2026

A boiler is cast iron or stainless steel and copper pipe, and oil boiler owners are facing a winter where NEADA expects bills about 31 percent higher. That is pushing both quotes and demand.

Two costs moved in 2026. Diesel passed $6 a gallon on September 11 (CBS 8 reporting AAA), and building inputs rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Ask if your price can change before work starts.
