How we calculate this

Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.

    Middle $140$75 to $200

    Tune up cost by type

AC tune up$75 to $200 according to Carrier. Angi says $60 to $200.
Furnace tune up$75 to $200. A little more than AC in many markets because of the safety checks. Fixr says $70 to $300.
Heat pump tune upAt the high end of the range. It runs all year, so it needs two visits.
Deep diagnostic visit$250 to $450 with duct leakage testing, airflow measurement and combustion analysis.
Yearly plan, two visits$150 to $350 in one guide and $150 to $500 in others. Basic plans are $100 to $200. Premium plans are $300 to $600.
Second system in the same homePlans are priced per system. Two furnaces and two ACs cost 1.5 to 2 times the single rate.
    New customer special$49 to $79.

    What pushes a quote up

The seasonBooking a furnace check in October or an AC check in June can carry a $15 to $30 peak charge. Shoulder season saves $20 to $50.
Your cityOne 2026 guide puts Minneapolis 15 to 25 percent above Atlanta or Dallas.
System typeModulating furnaces and multi head ductless systems take longer to check than a basic single stage unit.
AccessA furnace in a tight crawl space or a condenser on a roof can add a surcharge.
Plan or one offA plan spreads two visits across the year and adds repair discounts. It only pays if you use them.

HVAC tune up cost by region

Lower cost states$60 to $160. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states$75 to $200. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states$100 to $260. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Homes in very hot or very cold states run their systems 8 to 10 months a year, so two visits matter more there.

What a real tune up covers, and how long it should take

A standard visit should take 60 to 90 minutes. One 2026 guide is blunt about it: if the technician spends less than 45 minutes on a complete tune up, corners are being cut. That is the simplest test you have. Note the time the truck arrives and the time it leaves.

On the cooling side the tech should clean the outdoor coil, check the refrigerant charge, test the capacitor and contactor, tighten electrical connections and clear the drain line. On the heating side the list is the burners, the flame sensor, the heat exchanger, the inducer and blower, the safety switches and a carbon monoxide check. Many makers require yearly service to keep the warranty in force.

    The $49 tune up

First visit specials at $49 to $79 are everywhere in spring and fall. A company cannot send a truck and a trained tech for an hour at that price and make money. The visit is how they meet you. That is fine. Just expect a list of recommended repairs at the end, and do not approve anything on the spot. One 2026 guide says a capacitor or a contactor, the two most common AC repairs, should never cost more than $250 each.

    Does the plan pay

Do the math the way one Texas contractor lays it out. Two single visits at $150 each are $300 a year. If the plan is $300 and includes both, the repair discount and the priority booking are free extras. If the plan is $500, you need to use those extras for it to pay. Newer systems under warranty need only the basic plan.

Why this costs more in 2026

A tune up is mostly a truck roll and an hour of labor, so fuel is a bigger share of this bill than of most.

Two costs moved in 2026. Diesel passed $6 a gallon on September 11 (CBS 8 reporting AAA), and building inputs rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Ask if your price can change before work starts.
