    These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Appliance repair is mostly a parts bill, so the gap between states is smaller than it is for big home jobs.

    Repair or replace: the 50 percent rule, with real numbers

    The rule most repair guides use is simple. If the repair costs more than half of a new fridge, replace it. HomeGuide puts a new refrigerator at $600 to $2,300 for the unit alone. So on a $900 fridge, the line is $450. A $275 thermostat job is an easy yes. A $1,000 compressor is an easy no.

    Age moves the line. One 2026 repair guide says a fridge under 5 years old is almost always worth fixing, and one between 5 and 10 years should be judged case by case. HomeGuide says a fridge past 10 years is often worth replacing when a major part fails.

    Why compressor quotes differ by $500

    HomeGuide says $700 to $1,250. A 2026 repair company says $400 to $700. The part is the same $200 to $400 in both. The difference is labor and what comes with it. Replacing a compressor means cutting the old one out, brazing the new one in, pulling a vacuum and recharging the refrigerant. A low quote may leave out the recharge or the filter drier. Ask.

    Check the warranty before you pay anyone

    Many fridges carry a longer warranty on the sealed system than on the rest of the appliance. If yours is inside that window, the maker may cover the part, and you pay only labor. The model and serial label is inside the fresh food section, usually on the left wall.

    Why this costs more in 2026

    Repair techs drive to you, and parts ship to them. Fuel is in the trip charge and freight is in the part price.

    Every truck trip costs more now. Diesel passed $6 a gallon in September 2026 (CBS 8 reporting AAA), and material costs rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Quotes may only hold for a few weeks.
