A mini split costs $2,000 to $7,000 per zone installed in 2026. What changes your price is below.

One zone, one room, is the common job, at about $2,000 to $4,500 for a 9,000 to 12,000 BTU unit. The cost of installing a ductless mini split for a whole home runs $4,000 to $15,000 or more, because each extra indoor head adds about $1,500 to $3,000.

How we calculate this

Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.

    Cost by number of zones

    What pushes a quote up

Number of headsThe biggest driver by far.
BTU sizeBigger rooms need bigger units.
Line lengthLong runs to the outdoor unit add pipe, wire and time.
ElectricalEvery system needs its own circuit and a disconnect near the outdoor unit.
BrandMitsubishi and other premium brands cost more than entry brands.

Mini split installation cost by region

Lower cost states$1,600 to $5,600. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states$2,000 to $7,000. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states$2,600 to $9,100. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Mini splits are most common in the Northeast and in older homes without ducts.

Plan for two zones even if you buy one

A multi zone outdoor unit can feed several indoor heads. A single zone unit feeds one. If you buy a single zone system now and want a second room later, you may need a new outdoor unit and pay for it twice. One installer estimates that planning for two zones up front saves about $1,200 to $2,000 compared with adding one later.

The other side: past three heads, one 2026 guide says separate systems or a ducted system often compete on price. At five heads, get a quote for ducted central air or a ducted heat pump too.

The inspection item that fails most

An electrical supply guide notes that a disconnect switch within sight of the outdoor unit, required by the electrical code, is the item most often failed at inspection. Ask your installer if the disconnect and a dedicated circuit are in the price.

Why this costs more in 2026

Mini splits are copper line sets, compressors and electronics shipped from overseas.

Two costs moved in 2026. Diesel passed $6 a gallon on September 11 (CBS 8 reporting AAA), and building inputs rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Ask if your price can change before work starts.
