Why a panel comes first for heat pumps, EVs and generators

Many 2026 projects start at the panel. A heat pump, an EV charger, an induction range or a standby generator can all need more capacity than an older 100 amp panel has. Inch Calculator notes that homes larger than about 1,800 square feet typically need at least 200 amps, and many older homes have 100 to 150.

If you are planning one of those projects, have an electrician do a load calculation first. It may show your panel is fine, or that you need a 200 amp upgrade before anything else. See our heat pump cost and whole house generator cost pages.

    Call the utility early

Before a 200 amp upgrade, the electric company has to confirm the line to your house can carry it. If it cannot, the job can more than double, and the utility sets the schedule. Ask your electrician to check this in the first visit.

Why this costs more in 2026

Panels, breakers and copper wire follow metal prices, and copper wire and cable prices were up about 22 percent in a year, according to one 2026 contractor report.

Every truck trip costs more now. Diesel passed $6 a gallon in September 2026 (CBS 8 reporting AAA), and material costs rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Quotes may only hold for a few weeks.
