Push back on the built in yearly rise

Mimecast contracts commonly include 5 to 8 percent annual rises. One buyer got that cut from 8 percent to 2.5 percent by naming a firm budget and mentioning Abnormal Security and Proofpoint as alternatives. Another cut a monthly price by 43 percent by switching bundles where tools overlapped.

Also watch the licence count. Buyers report being trued up mid contract when usage passes the number on the order form, so keep your seat count accurate.

Where these numbers come from

Mimecast prices by quote, so there is no official figure to point to. What exists is a pattern of reported contracts, published by buyers, analysts and review sites. This page pulls those together and names each one, so you can see the range before a rep names theirs.

How to judge the quote in your hand

Ask for the uplift in writing and push it toward 2 to 3 percent.
Ask for the all in number: licence, setup, training and support for year one.
Ask what renewal looks like in year two and three, in writing.
Get a second quote from a rival and say so on the call.
Buy at quarter end, when reps chase targets.
Cut seats and modules you will not use in the first 90 days.

Ways to pay less

Check for overlap with security tools you already own.
Pay yearly if the discount is real, not just a rounding of the monthly price.
Start on the lowest tier and upgrade when you hit a wall.
Ask for the setup fee to be waived or split over the year.
Check the free trial or demo before you sign anything.

Before you decide

Buying through a large reseller is a route many buyers use, since resellers carry their own margin and can move on price when the vendor will not. Ask for both a direct quote and a reseller quote, then compare support terms as well as price.

One more thing: archiving storage grows every year. Ask how storage is billed past your allowance, because a cheap first year can turn into an expensive third year.

Finally, test support during the trial, not after. Reviewers say email support is slow and phone support is much better, and Gold support carries a real cost. Call the support line with a made up question and time the answer before you decide which tier to buy.
