    What pushes a quote up

    MaterialThe biggest single driver.
Size and depthMore digging and more water.
SiteSlopes, rock and poor access raise excavation costs.
What is left outPermits, fencing, decking, electrical, heater and landscaping are often extra.
Where you liveNorthern states with fewer pool builders can cost more.

    Inground pool cost by region

Lower cost states$35,600 to $70,000. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states$44,500 to $87,500. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states$57,800 to $113,800. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Sun Belt states have more builders and often lower prices, but longer waits in spring.

The shell quote is not the pool price

Most pool quotes start with the pool itself: digging, the shell or liner, basic plumbing, a pump and filter, steps, and startup. Swimply's 2026 guide lists what is usually left out: permits and inspections, fencing and gates, landscaping and decking, retaining walls, electrical work, a heater, cover, lights and automation. Those can add 15 to 30 percent or more.

A safety fence is required in many places. Electrical runs to the pump and lights need a licensed electrician. Ask every builder for a full backyard price, not just the pool.

    Cost over time

Vinyl is cheapest now but needs a new liner every 7 to 15 years. Fiberglass needs the least upkeep. Concrete lasts the longest but needs resurfacing. Price the first 20 years, not just the first day.

Why this costs more in 2026

Pools need excavators, concrete trucks and a crane for fiberglass shells, all diesel powered. Diesel passed $6 a gallon in September 2026.

Every truck trip costs more now. Diesel passed $6 a gallon in September 2026 (CBS 8 reporting AAA), and material costs rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Quotes may only hold for a few weeks.
