How much does a radon mitigation system cost?

A radon mitigation system costs $800 to $2,500 in 2026. What changes your price is below.

Most homes land near $1,200 to $1,500. Wisconsin's health department puts the average at $1,000 to $2,000. The usual system is sub slab depressurization: a fan and a pipe that pull radon from under the floor and vent it above the roof. It is usually installed in less than a day.

House size and sectionsMore foundation sections can need more suction points or fans.
SoilTight soil can need more work to draw air.
Pipe routeInside or outside the house, and how far to the roof.
Starting levelVery high readings may need a stronger system.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Radon is common in the Midwest, the Northeast and the Appalachian area, but any home can have it.

When to fix it, and who should do it

The EPA action level is 4.0 picocuries per liter. Massachusetts public health guidance says to mitigate above that level and to consider it between 2 and 4, because no level is risk free. See our radon test cost page to test first.

Hire a contractor certified by the National Radon Proficiency Program or the National Radon Safety Board. Both state guides warn that a system installed badly can make radon worse. After it is installed, test again to confirm the level dropped.

    Worth it

In December 2025, the EPA published a cost benefit analysis that Wisconsin summarizes: fixing homes above the action level returns up to $15 for every dollar spent. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer after smoking.

Why this costs more in 2026

A mitigation system is a fan, PVC pipe and a day of labor. PVC is made from oil and gas.

Two costs moved in 2026. Diesel passed $6 a gallon on September 11 (CBS 8 reporting AAA), and building inputs rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Ask if your price can change before work starts.
