    Dental exam cost by region

Lower cost states$50 to $130. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states$65 to $165. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states$85 to $215. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Suburban and community offices often charge 15 to 30 percent less than dense metro practices.

Why the first visit costs more than the exam

The exam is the dentist's check of your teeth, gums, bite and jaw, plus an oral cancer screening. Pearl notes it is billed apart from X-rays and the cleaning, even though all three usually happen at the same visit. So a new patient visit often adds up to several hundred dollars without insurance.

Ask the office for the full price of a new patient visit, not just the exam line. Many offices run new patient specials that bundle all three.

    More dental exam price checks

The Dental Savings Guide 2026 price index puts a routine exam at $50 to $150, with an average near $75.

A new patient visit costs more because it bundles the exam, a cleaning and X-rays. That index puts it at $200 to $450, about $285 on average.

    A set of 4 bitewing X-rays runs about $40 to $120. A full mouth or panoramic X-ray runs about $60 to $250.

Why your bill may have 3 lines

Offices bill the exam, the X-rays and the cleaning as separate codes. Ask for the total for all three before your visit.

Bitewing X-rays are usually taken once a year. A full set is usually needed only every few years. Ask if you really need new X-rays today.

If you had X-rays at another office in the last year, ask them to send the files. That can save you the fee.
