Suburban and community offices often charge 15 to 30 percent less than dense metro practices.
The four levels of dental sedation
Pearl lists four levels. Laughing gas keeps you awake but relaxed and wears off in minutes. A sedation pill before the visit calms moderate anxiety. IV sedation puts you in a twilight state, often with little memory of the visit. General anesthesia puts you fully to sleep and needs an anesthesia provider.
Sedation is billed separately from the work itself, so ask for one total. After anything deeper than laughing gas you need a driver home. Sedation is most common for wisdom teeth removal, implants and long visits.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Ask which level and why.
- Ask who gives it and their training.
- Ask for one total with the dental work.
- Ask how it is billed by time.
- Tell them every medicine you take.
Ways to pay less
- Try laughing gas first for mild nerves.
- Group treatments into one sedated visit.
- Ask your insurer about medical need.
- Compare an oral surgeon's quote.

Pearl's May 2026 data lists nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, at $50 to $150 a visit. Oral sedation, a pill before the visit, runs $200 to $400. IV sedation runs $400 to $1,000 or more. General anesthesia runs $700 to $2,000 or more. Sedation is billed on top of the dental work itself. Always ask for the total of both. Many offices bill IV sedation by time. One Orange County office lists $400 to $600 an hour, with most cases taking 1 to 2 hours. A one hour extraction would add $400 to $600. A two hour implant visit would add $800 to $1,200. With IV sedation you cannot drive home. Plan for someone to take you. Insurance rarely pays for sedation just for nerves. It may pay when sedation is medically needed, so ask for a pre approval. Checked September 2026. About $335 to $880 per visit, around $515 on average. About $50 to $150 per visit. About $400 to $1,000 or more. Coverage is limited, usually only when medically needed.
