Why gum grafts are billed per tooth
A gum graft covers roots that are showing because the gum has pulled back. The tissue can come from the roof of your mouth, from a donor or from a synthetic material. Pearl notes tissue from your own palate has the best success rate but means two surgical spots.
Receding gums tend to get worse, and exposed roots decay and feel sensitive. Treating recession early usually means fewer sites and a smaller bill. Fixing the cause, such as hard brushing, grinding or gum disease, keeps it from coming back. See deep cleaning and night guard prices.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Ask how many sites and the per site fee.
- Ask which graft type.
- Ask the success rate for your case.
- Ask about sedation.
- Get pre-authorization.
Ways to pay less
- Treat recession early.
- Use insurance when it is medically needed.
- Ask about donor tissue as an option.
- Get a second opinion for many sites.
Before you decide
This page covers prices only. It is not medical or dental advice. Talk to a licensed provider about what treatment you need, and ask for a written estimate and your insurer's pre-authorization before you start.
The graft fee is not the whole bill. ThePricer (2026) walks through a one tooth example. A consult of about $150, X-rays and gum charting of about $200, a connective tissue graft of about $950 and about $100 for medicine and follow up. The total is about $1,400 before insurance. A four tooth case with donor tissue and sedation can pass $3,000. Tissue taken from the roof of your mouth costs less in materials. Donor tissue, like AlloDerm, adds a material fee but means no second wound. Doing several teeth in one visit usually costs less per tooth than doing them one at a time. Insurance is more likely to help when the graft protects an exposed root, not when it is only for looks. Ask your periodontist to send a pre approval request. Checked September 2026. About $600 to $1,570 per site, around $920 on average. Most PPO plans pay about 50 percent when medically needed. Initial healing takes about 2 to 3 weeks. Often decades if the cause is fixed.
