What E&O covers
E&O insurance covers claims that your work or advice caused a client to lose money. It helps pay lawyers and settlements. It is the same thing as professional liability insurance. In health care it is called malpractice insurance.
It is different from general liability, which covers injuries and damage to other people's property. Many service businesses need both.
Why two averages differ
QuoteSweep explains that the median is what the middle buyer pays, while the average is pulled up by a few high risk, high premium buyers. So most small businesses should expect a price near the lower number.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Ask the per claim and total limits.
- Ask if legal costs come out of the limit.
- Ask the deductible.
- Ask about prior acts coverage for past work.
- Ask if it is claims made.
Ways to pay less
- Pick limits your contracts require, not more.
- Use written contracts with clear scope.
- Bundle with general liability from one insurer.
- Get 3 quotes.
- Keep good records of client sign offs.
Before you decide
Claims made means timing matters
Most E&O policies are claims made. The policy must be active when the claim is filed, not just when the work was done. If you cancel, ask about tail coverage for claims that come later.
A worked example
Say a web designer pays $55 a month, or $660 a year. A client says a site bug cost them $20,000 in sales and sues. The policy can pay the lawyer and a settlement up to the limit, minus the deductible.

About $50 to $88 a month for most small businesses. Yes. They are two names for the same coverage. Often about $600 to $1,051, but it can top $7,000 for risky work. Many service businesses carry both, because they cover different risks. Related jobs people check next, with the usual 2026 price.Common questions
