Store, chain or private eye doctor?
The All About Vision survey found a big gap by place. A vision center inside a store averaged $89. A private practice averaged $144. That is about $51 more, or 60 percent. Private offices pay more for rent, staff and equipment, and many spend more time with each patient.
A routine exam checks how well you see and the health of your eyes. It gives you a prescription for glasses. If you wear contact lenses, you need a separate contact lens fitting, which Clark.com says adds $50 to $70 on average.
Medical eye problems are billed differently
If you go in for a red eye, an injury or a disease like glaucoma, the visit is often billed to your health insurance, not your vision plan. Ask the office how they will bill before the visit.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Ask the exam price before you book.
- Ask if dilation or retina photos cost extra.
- Ask the contact lens fitting price.
- Ask if they take your vision plan.
- Ask for your prescription in writing.
Ways to pay less
- Use your vision plan if you have one.
- Try a store vision center.
- Skip retina photos unless the doctor says you need them.
- Use an FSA or HSA.
- Ask about a cash price.
Before you decide
How often you need one
Many eye doctors suggest a routine exam every one to two years for adults, and more often if you have diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of eye disease. Children need exams too, since many vision problems show up in school.
An eye exam and a vision screening are not the same. A school or driver's license screening only checks if you can read letters. An exam also looks at the health of your eye.
You own your prescription. Under federal rules, the eye doctor must give you your glasses prescription after the exam, even if you buy your glasses somewhere else.

Kids and seniors
Medicare Part B does not usually cover routine eye exams for glasses, but it does cover some eye exams for people with diabetes or glaucoma risk. Many children's health plans include vision care.
About $89 to $144, around $110 on average. Store vision centers, such as Walmart and Costco, often charge $75 to $100. Usually $50 to $70 more than a glasses exam.
