Sump pump replacement costs $800 to $3,000 in 2026. What changes your price is below.

Angi puts a professional install at about $1,100 on average. A Chicago area contractor puts 2026 installs at about $1,400, with a range of $500 to $4,000. Swapping a pump in an existing pit is the cheap end. Digging a new pit and running new discharge pipe is the top.

    What pushes a quote up

New pit or old pitBreaking concrete and digging a pit is the big jump.
Pump typeSubmersible pumps cost more than pedestal pumps and are quieter.
HorsepowerMore water needs a bigger pump.
Discharge lineA new line through the wall or under the yard adds work.
BackupA battery backup or water powered backup adds a second pump.

Sump pump replacement cost by region

Lower cost states$650 to $2,400. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states$800 to $3,000. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states$1,050 to $3,900. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Basements, and so sump pumps, are most common in the Midwest and Northeast.

The backup is the part that saves you

A sump pump fails in two common ways: the motor wears out, or the power goes out in the same storm that fills the pit. The second one is why a backup matters. Angi's basement waterproofing guide puts a new backup battery at $100 to $300 every 3 to 5 years, and warns that a system without one can fail in the first storm that cuts the power.

If you are replacing a pump, this is the cheapest time to add a backup, because the plumber is already there and the pit is open.

When to replace before it fails

Angi's guide gives pumps a life of about 7 to 10 years. If yours is near that age, replacing it on your schedule costs less than an emergency call at night with water on the floor. Test it twice a year by pouring a bucket of water into the pit and watching it cycle.

Why this costs more in 2026

Pumps are motors and cast housings shipped by truck, and PVC discharge pipe is made from oil and gas.

Every truck trip costs more now. Diesel passed $6 a gallon in September 2026 (CBS 8 reporting AAA), and material costs rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Quotes may only hold for a few weeks.
