How we calculate this

Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.

    Middle $3,500$2,000 to $5,000

    Cost by method

Spot repair, 5 to 10 feet$1,500 to $4,000. For one broken section when the rest of the pipe is sound.
Open trench, dig and replace$50 to $125 per foot. The cheapest per foot and the hardest on your yard.
Pipe bursting, trenchless$60 to $200 per foot. A new pipe is pulled through as the old one is broken apart. Angi reports $150 to $190 per foot.
Cured in place lining, trenchless$80 to $250 per foot. A resin liner hardens inside the old pipe. Angi reports $135 to $150 per foot.
A 50 foot line, all inOne July 2026 engineering calculator: $8,900 to $16,300 open trench, $6,000 to $13,000 pipe bursting, $7,000 to $15,000 lining.
Camera inspection$125 to $750. Most plumbers charge $200 to $400.
Permit and inspection$300 to $1,500 in most cities. Some are as low as $30.
    New cleanout$350 to $1,100.

    What pushes a quote up

LengthThe per foot rate times the distance to the street is most of the bill. Ten extra feet can add thousands.
DepthEach step deeper adds about $12 to $70 per foot, because deep trenches need shoring and bigger machines.
What sits on topA line under a driveway or patio adds $2,000 to $8,000 in concrete or asphalt repair. A 50 foot trench across a landscaped yard adds $2,000 to $6,000 in sod and planting.
Your cityPremium metros such as New York, San Francisco and Boston run 20 to 35 percent higher.
Pipe sizeGoing from a 4 inch to a 6 inch line adds 15 to 25 percent.

Sewer line replacement cost by region

Lower cost states$2,400 to $8,000. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states$3,000 to $10,000. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states$3,900 to $13,000. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Older cities with clay and cast iron laterals, and cities with many mature street trees, see the most replacements.

Trench or trenchless: the total is what counts

Open trench has the lowest price per foot and often the highest final bill. The trench itself costs only $5 to $12 per foot to dig. Putting your property back is the expensive part. One worked example in a 2026 calculator shows trenchless saving $6,000 to $12,000 on a line that ran under a concrete driveway and a paver patio, even though the trenchless rate per foot was higher.

Trenchless is not always possible. Lining needs an old pipe that is still mostly round. Bursting needs a fairly straight run. A pipe that has collapsed or has a sag, which plumbers call a belly, usually has to be dug up.

Who owns the pipe under the street

Homeowners often assume the city owns everything past the sidewalk. In many places it does not. Many sewer districts make the owner responsible for the whole lateral, from the house to the connection with the public main, including the part under the sidewalk and street. Work in that right of way adds permit and traffic control costs. Call your sewer utility before you sign, and ask where your responsibility ends.

    Why national averages look low

Angi reports an average of $2,900 and a range of $1,900 to $6,000. Plumbers in Texas report $5,000 to $15,000 for a trenched replacement and $4,000 to $12,000 for trenchless. Both can be true. The national average includes many short, shallow lines in low cost areas. If your line is 75 feet long and runs under concrete, the contractor numbers are the ones to plan around.

    Ways to pay less

Why this costs more in 2026

Excavators burn diesel by the hour, PVC pipe is made from oil and gas, and the driveway patch is asphalt or concrete.

Fuel is the common thread. AAA's national average for diesel passed $6 a gallon for the first time on September 11, 2026, up from about $3.70 a year earlier (CBS 8 reporting AAA). Materials moved too. Associated Builders and Contractors reported construction input prices up 4.8 percent in a year as of March 2026, the largest annual gain since January 2023, and the Associated General Contractors said diesel jumped 37.8 percent in one month, the largest one month rise since 1990 (Roofing Contractor, April 2026).
