Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.

    What pushes a quote up

HeightOver 4 feet needs engineering, a permit and deeper footings.
MaterialTimber is cheapest; stone costs the most.
DrainageGravel and pipe behind the wall add cost but stop failure.
    AccessTight yards slow the work.
Old wall removalAbout $15 to $30 per linear foot.

    Retaining wall cost by region

Lower cost states$2,800 to $7,000. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas.
Average cost states$3,500 to $8,700. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities.
Higher cost states$4,600 to $11,300. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Labor is the biggest part of the bill, so local wages move the price.

How much does a 3 foot retaining wall cost?

A 3 foot tall wall is the most common size, and it stays under the 4 foot line where most towns want an engineer. Remodel Calculators puts a 50 foot long, 3 foot tall wall at $2,700 to $6,800 in block and $2,300 to $4,800 in timber, drainage included.

Keep it under 4 feet if you can. Angi notes this avoids a structural engineer and cuts the labor for supports and footings. Two shorter terraced walls often cost less than one tall wall.

How much does it cost to repair or replace a retaining wall?

Small fixes for cracks or leaning often run a few hundred to about $1,200, per Angi data. Tearing out and rebuilding a 50 foot long, 4 foot tall wall can cost $7,000 to $24,000. A leaning wall usually means water is pushing on it, so fix the drainage too.

    Do not skip drainage

Poor drainage is one of the most common reasons walls fail. Gravel backfill and a drain pipe add cost but save a rebuild.

Why this costs more in 2026

Concrete, stone and diesel for the trucks and machines that dig and haul all cost more in 2026, and hardscape crews are busy.

Diesel passed $6 a gallon on the AAA national average for the first time on September 11, 2026 (CBS 8 reporting AAA). Builders also paid 4.8 percent more for materials in a year (Roofing Contractor). Ask how long your quote is good for.
