These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Northeast and West Coast moves can cost 30 to 50 percent more because of stricter rules and terrain.

    Check these before you book

LocalMovers.com lists three things that stop moves cold. First, taxes: most counties will not issue a moving permit until property taxes are paid in full. Second, age: homes built before June 15, 1976, when the HUD Code took effect, are restricted or banned from moving in many states. Third, wind zones: a Wind Zone I home cannot legally be set up in a Wind Zone III coastal area. Check the HUD data plate inside the home.

Your homeowners policy usually does not cover the home while it is on the road. Transit insurance runs about $300 to $1,000 or more. Take dated photos of every room before the move.

    Move or sell

For long moves of older homes, the same guide suggests comparing the full moving cost with selling and buying at the destination. If moving costs more than half the home's value, buying there is often smarter.

Why this costs more in 2026

There are fewer specialized toter trucks and drivers this year, so book 8 to 12 weeks ahead.

Two costs moved in 2026. Diesel passed $6 a gallon on September 11 (CBS 8 reporting AAA), and building inputs rose 4.8 percent in a year (Roofing Contractor). Ask if your price can change before work starts.
