A plumber service call costs $75 to $250 in 2026
Most homeowners pay $100 to $175 just for a plumber to come out, look at the problem and quote the repair. The fee usually includes the drive and a short inspection. Hourly labor and parts come on top.
What you get for the fee
| What the fee covers | Travel, an inspection of the problem, and a repair quote. Some plumbers include the first hour of labor in the fee; many don't. |
|---|---|
| Hourly labor after the fee | $80-$130 per hour for a standard residential plumber. Master plumbers bill $100-$200 per hour. |
| Is it waived if you repair? | Sometimes. Ask directly: "Does the service call fee count toward the bill?" Policies vary more in plumbing than in HVAC. |
| Nights, weekends, holidays | 1.5× to 3× the daytime rate, often plus a flat emergency surcharge of $100-$350. |
| Trip fee vs. service call fee | Same thing. Some companies also call it a dispatch fee or call-out fee. |
| Big-city premium | Urban markets run 20-30% higher. Service fees of $250-$350 are common in large coastal metros. |
| Cheapest way to use a plumber | Bundle several small jobs into one visit. You pay one service call fee instead of three. |
Why plumber companies charge it
A plumber's day is mostly driving and diagnosing. The service call fee pays for the truck, the fuel, the insurance and the plumber's time before any repair is approved. Around three-quarters of plumbing calls are urgent, which is also why after-hours pricing is steep.

A service call fee has to cover everything that happens before a repair is approved. The calculator adds those costs and then applies your margin.
- Burdened labor rate = wage × (1 + burden%) ÷ billable%. A $32/hr technician with 35% burden who is billable 70% of the day really costs $61.71 per productive hour.
- Travel labor = burdened rate × drive minutes ÷ 60.
- Vehicle cost = round-trip miles × cost per mile. The IRS business rate is 76¢ per mile from July 1, 2026, up from 72.5¢ in the first half of the year.
- Included on-site time = burdened rate × on-site minutes ÷ 60.
- Break-even = travel labor + vehicle cost + on-site time + dispatch cost.
- Fee = break-even ÷ (1 − margin%). Dividing by (1 − margin) gives a true margin on price; multiplying by (1 + margin) would be markup, which is smaller.
Worked example: $32 wage, 35% burden, 70% billable, 45 minutes of driving, 24 miles, 30 minutes on site, $15 dispatch, 30% margin. Break-even is $46.28 + $18.24 + $30.86 + $15.00 = $110.38. Fee = $110.38 ÷ 0.70 = $157.69, which sits inside the normal HVAC range.
